Failed Back Syndrome

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

The most common signs and symptoms include:

  • Persistent low back pain
  • Extremity pain associated with radiculopathy (nerve root compromise)
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Weakness
  • Psychiatric complications associated with chronic pain

RISK FACTORS

The primary risk factor for developing failed back syndrome is the severity of the spine disorder and complexity and duration of spine surgery. The more complicated the underlying spinal condition and related surgery, the greater the risk for complications and the development of a failed back syndrome.
