Whiplash

TREATMENT OPTIONS

Treatment for individuals with whiplash may include pain medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antidepressants, muscle relaxants, and a cervical collar (usually worn for 2 to 3 weeks). Chiropractic care, range of motion exercises, physical therapy, and cervical traction may also be prescribed. Supplemental ice and heat application may relieve muscle tension.

PREVENTION

The best method for preventing whiplash syndrome is the proper use of safety devices in vehicles and by avoiding physical activities associated with greater risk for neck injury. For example, the proper placement of the headrest in a car can prevent neck hyperextension if an accident occurs. Early detection and timely intervention is generally associated with better treatment outcome.
