The term muscle fasiculations refers to visible or palpable twitching of small groups of muscle fibers. It can occur in one or more muscles. Fasiculations can develop secondary to a variety of causes including compromise of the spinal cord, compromise of one or more spinal nerve roots, peripheral nerve damage, and with muscle disease. Electrolyte abnormalities and certain metabolic disorders can also result in muscle fasiculations.  Recurrent muscle fasiculations accompanied by muscle atrophy and/or spasticity is often the result of progressive neurological compromise.
